Further to yesterdays blog I return a little tired having spent most of yesterday afternoon with a Jack Russell cross Pom bitch in labour.
It was an a slow start followed by an emergency visit to the vet, at 10.30, due to mum stopping contractions. One injection of oxytocin and and the birthing started on the back seat of the car on the return home.
The puppy got stuck and more emergency calls to the vet from the frantic owner whilst I "encouraged" the puppy who was difficult to hold as she was tail first. I had to break open the membrane and towel rub the disturbingly still pup whilst clearing his tiny mouth. It gagged & breathed. Minutes later it was suckling and everything was rather quite for about an hour. Then came number 2.
Number 2 was a significantly larger female, tail first but faster less, frenetic. Hey I was an experienced hand by now so all the above came a bit more naturally, helped by the fact she started moving and breathing easier on the rub. Another long wait for the very tiny but much more lively number 3. Normally this would have been the runt. About 1/2 the size of the largest but seemingly far more lively and suckled more vigorously than either of the previous 2.
It was an amazing sight to witness and even more to be a part of. Mum and puppies are all doing well.
