I have just been reading about a man in the UK who successfully registered his cat with three different bodies representing Hypnotherapists.  Apart from the obvious lack of industry checks it seems that the bodies themselves can be created by anyone who wishes to create one with no formal qualifications, since it is largely unregulated.

Frankly I am amazed that in today's society where every industry sector has come under increasing scrutiny that this escaped not just regulation but  with it litigation.

When we were in retail, we had a step up to the rear of the shop.  The step wad highlighted with black and yellow markings and there were several signs displaying a warning of the step.  Despite this accidents will happen and we played witness to several "trips" which 15 years ago would have been nothing more than a customer not watching where they were going.  Increasingly the victims of these blunders began to look for the sign with a view to sue us for damaged ligaments, limbs as well as pride.  they would have suffered immeasurable distress only made better by vastly inflated compensation made possible by no win no fee lawyers who are currently bleeding the country dry.

My husband was the victim of many litigious attempts.  Not once did he lose a case against him.  It does not stop over inflated insurance premiums to be increased ten fold over the course of just 3 years.  So who pays for this.  Ultimately the customer.  There is little no black market anymore, commitment to staffing has meant that sub contracting in a specialised industry has created elevated prices throughout the UK, insurance cover means that the days of having your house painted for a reasonable sum is no longer possoble.  Full scafolding with their premiums as well as the painters costs and premiums must also be accounted for. Clearly there is a need for health and safety but not ridiculous claims when it is evident that all procedures were properly followed.

Such is the state of play that Torquay council in their wisdom chopped down some old and beautiful trees lining the streets of some important  historic  cliffs in front of the Victorian promenade.  This was to stop claims from anyone who fell from them whilst trying to climb them.  The rooting systems were playing a huge part in keeping the cliffs from tumbling and after they were cut down the roots rotted and a section of the prom, houses and shops were lost due to crumbling substrate.  Hmm, its not rocket science to see who will pay for this and it incredible that they were not accountable.

The compensation culture is unsustainable and ultimately will be deprived of its existance.

Until then, maybe we should take the time to recognise this greedy industry for what it is.  An economic catastrophe which is plunging the country into further debt and many small businesses to go bankrupt.  Now we should all pull together to help the new government build itself back to where we once were.  To do otherwise is unpatriotic and irresponsible.
